Mr. Kim Jong Un is set to make a journey to Russia in September, with plans to meet President Vladimir Putin and explore the potential of supplying Moscow with weaponry for the conflict in Ukraine. This development aligns with Russia’s pursuit of closer military cooperation with North Korea.
In an unusual international trip, Mr. Kim is expected to depart from Pyongyang, possibly using an armored train, and head to Vladivostok, a city on Russia’s Pacific coast, where he will engage in discussions with Mr. Putin. This information was reported by The New York Times, citing sources from the United States and its allies.
The White House’s national security spokesperson, John Kirby, expressed concerns on August 30 regarding the progress of arms negotiations between the two nations. During their meeting in Vladivostok, situated in close proximity to North Korea, the two leaders will delve into the possibility of Mr. Kim supplying Russia with artillery shells and anti-tank missiles in exchange for Moscow’s advanced satellite technology and nuclear-powered submarine capabilities, as per the newspaper’s report.
As the United States has raised apprehensions about the strengthening military ties between these two countries, news of Mr. Kim’s upcoming visit follows Russia’s statement about considering joint military exercises with North Korea.
Russia’s Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, emphasized the importance of amicable relations with neighboring countries, stating, “Why not? These are our neighbors. There is an old Russian saying: You don’t choose your neighbors, and it is better to live with your neighbors in peace and harmony,” as reported by the Interfax news agency. Regarding the possibility of joint exercises between the two nations, he confirmed that such discussions were indeed underway.
